Just before Holmes and Moriarty did their whole Reichenbach death thing in A Game of Shadows, Watson appeared and met Sherlock’s gaze briefly. Holmes then closed his eyes and did not open them again.
To me it is utter canon that Sherlock did this so that if he died, the last thing he would ever see would be John Watson.
